There are also implications that could involve enormous risk of human suffering caused by unrestricted tinkering and ego-centered development.

I surely wouldn't want this to cause human suffering, enormous or otherwise. Seems to me that we would have to look at where the suffering enters the picture and stop short of that. We've already discussed and rejected producing an actual baby, or even implanting an embryo, at least I have, because the risks are astronomical and the reward is in a class with cosmetics. I reject reproductive cloning totally. Go ahead and pass a law against it. That's fine with me.

Where else in this do we risk human suffering? Well, we could get it from some medical treatment that wasn't ready for prime time. You and I discussed that yesterday. We would want to be really sure of the risks before subjecting humans to any treatment that could result from this. Or at least have informed consent. Pain from false hopes, I guess. Better than the pain from no hope, IMO. Where else do we risk suffering? I can't think of anyplace. Can you?

What if that flesh also involves another soul?

For those who think an embryo is a human entity with a soul, I don't suppose there can be any further discussion. I accept that those folks exist. I don't see any point in discussing whether they're right or not. We've already beaten that to death in abortion discussions. It's a religious thing. I understand their position. I don't see an ethical problem as long as we're dealing with embryos, not fetuses. My interest is in figuring out what other risks there might me.

And I can't think of any legitimate ones. I am open to suggestions.

Do you have any assurances that we are not simply taking the first step down such a path? As in the goal to"create a better race" mentioned on this thread.

As long as we stop short of implanting embryos in a womb, I really don't see how we can get into much trouble. Certainly not into any trouble that we can't get out of by just stopping what we're doing. All upside, no downside, IMO.
