Jerry's quid pro quo: Drop IA-64, support Hammer, and I'll say in court you told me the whole court thing is "crazy."

From the story being heavily referenced this morning:

"Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) first witness against antitrust sanctions sought by nine states admitted in court on Tuesday that he asked for a favor when Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates called seeking his testimony. "

Comment: Which will probably hurt Microsoft a lot more than his rambling, anecdotal testimony will help MS. Here Jerry is telling the court that he thinks Microsoft is so powerful that he needed to curry favor with Gates.

"Jerry Sanders, chief executive of computer chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news), also conceded he had not read the states' proposed sanctions, but that Gates had told him they were ``crazy'' and would fragment the Windows operating system. "

Comment: And here Jerry confirms that he's too ignorant of current events to be speaking in public, let alone to be head of AMD.

Sanders also says that in exchange for testifying he wants Microsoft to drop support of an Intel chip (presumably the IA-64).

Needless to say, I oppose the plan to break-up or otherwise punish AMD. If people don't like Windows, they have plenty of choices. But seeing Jerry admit that his ignorant testimony--"Bill tells me it's crazy"--is in exchange for a favor from Bill is just too precious for words.

This public revelation probably makes it very unlikely that MS will drop support for IA-64 and increase support for Hammer. To do so would confirm the quid pro quo and would reward Jerry's mendacity.
