GST,

"You have to play hardball with folks like Sharon (and Arafat) and IMO The United States has failed to do that." I couldn't agree more.

How do you play hardball with a mass murderer who has his finger on nuclear WMD's?

Here is my idea: First, the Israeli's have to be given an ultimatum to stop hostilities and to pull back their armed forces. Then UN has to impose an all out embargo on Israel, cutting off all trade and aide. Next, the UN needs to authorize a Palestinian State with borders recognized by all UN members, A 60 to 90 day eviction notice to all Israeli settlers would allow for them to be re patriated to their homeland. This could be backed up with international armed forces. Once done, a "marshal plan" to re build Palestine should be implemented. The border could be protected by UN forces until the new Palestine can defend itself from Israeli aggression.
