I think you are on to something and in some ways that might be the direction in which we are headed. The Europeans clearly won't suck up to Sharon. The UN will not tolerate the settlements. And without the US to foot the bill and protect Israel from international condemnation, the stage is set for a shift in direction as you suggest. Israel clearly has weapons of mass destruction -- lets hope it does not come to that.
