Hi JC, Like you, I'm saddened and thoroughly disgusted by the depth of both the scandal and the coverup, but here's where we part ways: If his predatory behavior was covered up and enabled by higher-ups, I would not be the least surprised to find that those officials may have been gay themselves, which influenced their attitudes toward Shanley. There is still support within the gay male community for legitimatizing man-boy sexual activity, and I think it is likely that this insidious attitude reached within the Church. I don't believe that the pedophile faction within the gay population is any larger than that within the straight population. I also worry that the rights and respect that were hard-won by gays over the thirty years may be greatly diminished by this scandal. I hope that doesn't happen.
