April 16, 2002 12:27 PM Compaq rolls out networked storage gear By Ashlee Vance COMPAQ COMPUTER BROUGHT out two new storage systems Tuesday designed to bolster the lower end of its line of network attached storage (NAS) products. Both the StorageWorks NAS B3000 and the StorageWorks NAS S1000 are available immediately for users looking to build out their networked storage resources. The B3000 connects via Fibre Channel to an existing SAN (storage area network), giving users access to both block (SAN) and file (NAS) level data in one "pool" of storage systems. On the lower end, the S1000 is a NAS appliance that is targeted at smaller customers or branch offices, said Mark Nagaitis, director of marketing for Compaq's network attached storage division. Companies are continuing their migration away from direct attachments between servers and storage systems and toward SAN and NAS architectures that provide better links between all the hardware. The B3000 was designed to connect with Compaq's MSA 1000 SAN system via Fibre Channel and add file level data access to a SAN. The product starts at $43,000 with 288GB of storage capacity and a Fibre Channel switch, Nagaitis said.
