they are a rare exception and the military is not the place for exceptions.

I disagree with the former, and concur with the latter.

This is not about whether gays are cowards or poor soldiers. Remember the Spartans of Greek history and you'll find no better soldiers during that period.

But just as with women in the trenches, it's about unit cohesion. That, I believe, is the crux of your argument UncleWest..

And you and I agree with the don't ask, don't tell, policy.. If someone is gay and they can keep it private in such a way that it does not impact unit cohesion, I have no problem with their serving. But in the interest of unit and command cohesion, if other soldiers find out and it becomes an issue, then they should be honorably discharged.

Serving in the military is a privilege, not a right. And the needs of the many ALWAYS outweigh the needs of the few.

They segregate women and men from training together to prevent fraternization and degradation of unit cohesion... should it not also be the case for gays? We can't train gays separately, since there will still be a sexual fraternization issue between each of them. We can't train them with straight members of the opposite sex (who's sexual preference they would share) for the same reasons...

So for the very same reasons that people with medical and psychological conditions that make them incompatible with military service are discharged, the same should apply for gays who come out of the closet during their military service.
