When dealing with the common welfare, the government should be acting as
a referee.


When there has to be a really binding referee the government may be the only choice, but there is no particular reason to think that it will be a wise or unbiased referee.

And the government becomes the referee when the players are not asking for one. If you don't like what a player in the private sector is doing you can deal with other players, but you have to deal with our government. That's what I meant by the government being a monopoly. I'm not saying it should not be a monopoly, in some areas it has to be one, but there are negative consequences from extending this monopoly in to more and more areas of life. It will tend to reduce freedom and decrease economic efficiency.
