Interesting discussion on education, Am Spirit.
I don't agree with your opinion of catholic schools, however, since I've observed the public school system up close for the first time during the past 5 yrs. One of the factors that contribute to better student performance in parochial schools is the fact that parents are usually more involved with their children's homework each evening. The first item that opened my eyes to the difference in the systems was the fact my niece has almost no homwork. I could not believe it. Another difference which is ridiculous is the method of testing. If the class in general does poorly on a test, the teacher gives them the SAME test over & uses the results of the 2nd test as the official mark for report card mark calculation. Many times they have OPEN book tests--I laughed out loud the first time my niece described this so-called test to me. In other words, there are barely any standards for gauging performance in public schools anymore. Just about every student in the class is awarded "honors" each marking period. Pressure from parents seems to cause the teachers & school administrators to avoid setting the standard even slightly higher than average. The only students who are not considered "honors" calibre are those who are absent half the time and/or don't turn test papers in at all. Geo & Laura Bush have it exactly right when they say we must raise the bar of achievement & gauge both the performance of students & teachers in the public schools. The future of this country depends on it.
