Now how do you treat the $36B (?) writedown by JDS Uniphase or the other massive telecomm writedowns which probably resulted from stock purchases rather than cash purchases.

Gee, I hope the Feds were smart enough to prevent JDS Uniphase from having an $80 per share $34B net operating loss carryforward! For tax purposes it seems to make more sense to value acquired businesses at tangible book value rather than the price that was paid for them, if they were purchased with stock, but to value them at the price paid if they were purchased for cash.
