Against a cartel of companies plotting to dominate a market government intervention might be justified, but actual cartels and monopolies in the US are far more likely to be set up by the government then they are to exist in areas of the economy that are relatively unregulated.

If the government gets itself strongly involved in most economic transactions then everyone except perhaps those who have good political connections get poorer. The government should act against theft and fraud but most economic transactions to not amount to either theft or fraud and the majority of the economy should be very lightly regulated. There may be areas where more regulation could help, but there are more areas where we need less regulation then areas where more regulation would be a good idea.
