QS - I have been on the edge of buying the new powerbook for a while now. All of the reasons you cite.

I think the answer to your question is that Sun has never paid much attention to end users, and has depended mostly on outsiders for the small amount of SW they actually offer, so they don't have the culture or mindset to do an end user product. In the workstation market, there was so much available that it didn't matter. PCs are a different issue.
