Agreed. A mixture is best.

However, I still don't see where my example of memorizing the state capitols leads to any deeper understanding. Seems to simply be an exercise to fill some classroom time.

Btw: I am from the software industry. In general, memorization is not the key skill necessary. In fact, it seemed that those who could memorize all the language details couldn't program a lick...
