I recall them being pretty widely available in the '70s. Their availability might have led some astray, but I'm not sure that 1950s "Stepford Kids" conformity was any better.

and the legislative trends are likely to continue. We are not legislating a balanced body of laws that increase the role of parents as safe and protective harbors.

I don't think it has that much to do with legislation. I think a big part of the problem lies with spoiled parents who have been raised to believe that they can "have it all", and that raising children need not involve personal or professional sacrifice.
