I would love to find out where the Economist came up with that $1 billion a day figure.

I would like to know as well. One thing I am pretty sure of is that the governments don't spend a billion a day on this, but if you add in the cost to consumers its possible. You also could add in some of the cost of aid to poor countries because the might need the aid more if they can't sell their products, but then this cost would be lower then the other two parts of the cost, and counting it would probably be more controversial.
