What (if any) important regulations or area of regulation in the US contributes more harm to the US then good.
I don't think any major regulation contributes more harm. There is certainly a lot of flak directed toward environmental regulations, but I think that a healthy planet is an important legacy to our children.

your favorite controversial regulations
Maybe my favorite are the OSHA safety regulations (a legacy from my summer job at the Houston Ship Channel). Like mother said, "It's all fun and games until someone gets an eye put out".

I have an old truck (1950). I am now amazed that something with that many protruding knobs and steel levers with no seat belts was ever produced. I am very protective of the truck as I drive, but I also think what it would be like to hit that big steering wheel post at 40mpg, versus what it would be like to hit the airbag in my car. Of course it's apples and oranges, but it does illustrate what I consider a level of progress in regulatory efforts.
