To answer my own question about the cable boxes:

"And Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates met with top cable executives in New York on Monday to urge them to adopt a new set-top design that will use Windows CE software to facilitate interactive programming and cable modems for high-speed Internet surfing. Oracle Corp.'s Navio Communications, recently purchased from Netscape Communications, reportedly also has had discussions with cable operators about incorporating Netscape's browser software into new cable boxes."
