Lam's Q1 sales drops 37%, but nabs $100 million order from China's SMIC

FREMONT, Calif.-- Amid a drop in sales for the first quarter of 2002, Lam Research Corp. here today announced that it has received an order worth more than $100 million from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) of China.

Under the terms, SMIC--a silicon foundry startup in Shanghai--has ordered Lam's dielectric, silicon, and metal etch equipment. The Chinese foundry has also ordered Lam's CMP tools as well.




Last year, SMIC began ramping up production in its initial fab--an 8-inch, 0.25-micron plant. The company is also looking to develop 0.18-micron chips on a foundry basis as well (see March 14 story ).
