CLEVELAND -- Keithley Instruments Inc. today said it is now seeing the first signs of a recovery in more than a year while posting an 8% sequential increase in net sales to $22.0 million in the company's fiscal second quarter, which ended March 31.

The Cleveland-based supplier of measurement systems for semiconductors and other applications said its net loss for the quarter was $1.3 million compared to a net loss of $1.6 million in the prior three-month period, when sales totaled $20.4 million. Keithley's revenues in the just-ended quarter fell 49% from $44.2 million in the period last year.

The company reported orders grew 13% to $22.7 million in the second fiscal quarter from the prior quarter with higher bookings from both semiconductor and telecommunications industry customers.

"We are seeing more activity from our semiconductor customers than six months ago," said Joseph P. Keithley, chairman, president, and CEO. While revenues increased on a sequential basis for the first time in more than a year, the chief executive officer cautioned that market conditions remain "difficult in most segments of the electronics industry."
