Celeronized P4 is going to have really poor performance pr MHz, but AMD's current rating scheme is supposed to be based on "True Performance"? Where does that leave future Durons?

I had an interesting discussion with a Fry's computer salesman tonight. First, I noticed that they had twice as many AMD systems than anytime in the last 9 months. (Six, four of which were Palomino-based, one Duron, one TBird.) Then I noticed that they were all described by their MHz rather than their performance rating.

The laptop area was similarly well-stocked with just about every AMD laptop I'm aware of, including a Compaq one mislabled as "1600 MHz." Just two weeks earlier they only had Sony's clunkier (1 13/16" thick) AMD laptops.

I asked the salesman why they didn't advertise the performance rating and he said that they would prefer to explain to customers that AMD machines were just faster than their MHz rating. That explanation sounded a little fishy to me, but, hey, if they doubled the floor space devoted to AMD, I think that will have more positive effect than a misguided "honesty campaign."

(Fry's in the past has been the target of consumer activist groups suing them for various "atrocities." IMO, their return and refund policies are far more liberal than anyone that can match their sale prices. I've seen people screaming at sales clerks to get a refund on two year old computer parts. So the company is probably paranoid about being accused of false advertising.)
