Jobless claims rise to 5-month high

LOL .. the numbers are 'distorted' when they don't say what we want them to say ...

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- First-time claims for jobless benefits rose by 1,000 to 445,000 in the latest week, while the more-informative four-week average rose 13,750 to 448,750, the most since November, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The figures are distorted by workers re-filing for extended benefits. Since the federal law extending benefits was enacted in mid-March, average claims have risen from about 395,000 to nearly 450,000.

Economists expect the underlying pace of layoffs is closer to the 390,000 level. Economists' forecasts for the numbers are just shots in the dark. Markets have discounted the jobless claims report in the past few weeks.
