Exactly! In its very early days, Christianity was seen as (and in effect was) yet another Jewish sect intent on converting 'pagans' - i.e., good loyal worshippers of the Graeco-Roman pantheon. Xtianity was possibly more outgoing, but I'm unsure. I believe that's one of the reasons that Jews and then Xtians were so forcefully suppressed, because of their prosyletising being so successful at winning converts.

The question of WHY it would win over so many, when the alternatives included Dionysiac revelry or sinisterly fascinating Mithraic cults, is another matter <g>
