AFGHANISTAN - CANADIAN SOLDIERS KILLED IN 'FRIENDLY FIRE' ACCIDENT (APR 18/GM)
Date: 04/18/2002

GLOBE & MAIL -- A U.S. fighter jet mistakenly dropped a bomb on a group of Canadian soldiers during a live-fire training exercise in Afghanistan, killing four and wounding eight others, the Globe and Mail reports.

The Canadians, part of the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, were conducting a live-fire training exercise almost nine miles south of the air base at Kandahar when a U.S. F-16 dropped one or two 500-pound bombs on their position.

Both Canadian and U.S. officials were at a loss to explain what caused the accident. An investigation is underway.
