Preclinical Study in 'Cancer Research' Suggests Why Introgen's INGN 241 Works Effectively as Tumor Suppressor
Research Identifies Protein Kinase Gene as Key Regulator of Cancer Drug

AUSTIN, Texas, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A preclinical study published in Cancer Research may help to explain for the first time why INGN 241, an adenoviral vector encoding the melanoma differentiation association 7 (mda-7) gene in development at Introgen Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: INGN - news), works effectively as a tumor suppressor against a range of cancers. Researchers have identified a particular protein kinase gene (known as PKR) as playing a crucial role in facilitating the ability of INGN 241 to interfere with tumor development and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death). Stephen G. Swisher, M.D., associate professor of surgery in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, was the study's lead investigator.

``Demonstration that PKR is a critical target in INGN 241-mediated apoptosis is an important finding,'' said Dr. Swisher. ``This new data allows us to tie together the unique attributes of mda-7 protein, namely both tumor suppression and immune response activation. PKR is a key molecule that can regulate both these activities.''
