It is not as personal as you would have it, or Arafat would be dead. The first imperative of Israeli strategy, rarely violated, is not to let an outrage go unanswered. Sharon is acting the way almost any other Israeli administration would act under the circumstances. We are not in much of a position to object, since we have held that we have the right to root out terrorists wherever they may be, with or without the cooperation of the governments on the ground. Negotiation cannot proceed except on a realistic basis. That means that the Palestinians have to stop sending children to blow up children. Then, maybe they can talk.......
