Bloody incompetence:

Pilot mistook Canadian fire for enemy action: official

A US F-16 fighter pilot dropped a 500-pound bomb on Canadian troops in Afghanistan, killing four and wounding eight, because he mistook a live-fire exercise on the ground for hostile fire.

A US defence official says the Canadians were conducting a live-fire exercise in a known training area south of Kandahar, when they came under attack late on Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says it is not known whether the F-16 pilot or his air controller were aware of the exercise.

"It was a known exercise area, so we will have to look at it very closely," said the official.

It is the second fatal accident in Kandahar this week.

Four US serviceman were killed on Monday when rockets they were handling accidentally detonated.

US Forces spokesman in Afghanistan Major Brian Hilferty confirmed the details yesterday afternoon.

"At approximately 1.55 this morning, a US Air National Guard F-16 dropped one or two 500 pound bombs on our Canadian allies operating near Kandahar." Major Hilferty said.

"There were dead and wounded among the Canadians.

"I'd like to convey our condolences and prayers to the families and friends of the injured and dead soldiers from all of us here at the Coalition Joint Task Force Mountain," he said.
