Of course Nader cost Gore the election. This is not unusual. Populists like Nader, or Perot, or Wallace, can change the dynamics of an election.

What "petroleum substitutes" do you have in mind? The reason that petroleum is such a good fuel, is that a very big punch can be stored in a very small volume.

Gordon Langston posted an link to an article about BMW's hydrogen powered car. In order to get a range of over 200 miles, the car needs a larger fuel tank; a 37 gallon tank has to placed in the trunk of the car. In addition, the hydrogen needs to be cooled to -425 degrees, so that as much fuel as possible can stored in the fuel tank. This means using liquid hydrogen as fuel, the BMW hydrogen powered car gets like six miles/gallon.
