When you said that he got little respect, I assumed theat meant he was probably respectable, honest and maybe even sincere.

Benn is a far-left parliamentarian, now retired. I can't stand his politics, never could, but he's very honest, wholly principled. He actually gave up a hereditary title (and the estates, etc) so that he could continue to serve and stand as an MP.

Paisley is vile. But openly. He's as bigoted and vicious as Adams or McGuinness, and has similar paramilitary past - the difference is that he doesn't pretend otherwise. He cares no more than Adams for democracy, but at least with Paisley you don't have to worry about being stabbed in the back. (In the front, surely).
