Italy Skyscraper Incident 'Probably' Accident
Thu Apr 18,12:37 PM ET

MILAN (Reuters) - The pilot of a small tourist plane reported technical problems shortly before smashing into a central Milan skyscraper, an official with local air transport authorities said Thursday.

Police said a Piper tourist plane crashed into the 30-story building in late afternoon and eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing out of the upper windows.

Shortly afterwards the president of the upper house of parliament said the building was "very probably" the target of a terror attack, but soon afterwards his spokesman said it was probably an accident.

The transport official said the plane had reported problems with its undercarriage and was circling the city ahead of trying to land at a local airport.
