Marines Return From Afghanistan

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) — More than 2,000 Marines dispatched last fall to help hunt down terrorists linked to the Sept. 11 attacks returned Thursday from duty in Afghanistan.

The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit was the first military unit to leave the United States after the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.

Lt. Col. Jerome Lynes, commander of the unit's infantry troops, commended the Marines for their work overseas, noting many re-enlisted while they were living in foxholes, eating cold meals and going without showers for weeks.

Families were overjoyed at the return.

Lisa Hart, in tears after her husband got off a bus, told reporters that hugging him for the first time in seven months was like winning $1 million dollars.

In February, members of the unit handed over security of southern Afghanistan to the Army.

Their boys return home to hugs. Our return home in bodybags MADE IN AMERICA!
