You might want to go to www.dol.gov and familiarize yourself with the federal wage garnishment law. It has some clout in the situation you describe, and provides protection against some, but not all, the consequences of default.

You might also want to familiarize yourself with the many consequences of a damaged credit report......if applying for rental on an apartment, a home loan, a car loan, cell phone service, home telephone service, and any other type of monthly-billed service.
