U.S. pilot had no orders to drop bomb: Pentagon

The American jet that bombed Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan, killing four, may have attacked without authorization, Pentagon officials said Thursday.

U.S. officials said the pilot, believing he was under attack, was authorized to mark the target for a laser-guided bomb attack, but not to drop the bomb.

Two F-16 fighters were on routine patrol when one of the pilots saw what he thought were flashes from gunfire aimed at him, the officials said.

The U.S. Air National Guard pilot apparently didn't know he was flying over an area designated for training and mistook the Canadian live-fire exercises for an enemy attack, U.S. defence officials said.
