Who said the space program was cost-effective? Not I. Few voyages of exploration ... from Christopher Columbus right up to Shackleton ... were cost-effective. On the other hand, can one put a price tag on the information obtained from the Hubble Telescope?

The gasoline engine served America remarkably well in the 20th century. However, it's now time to start looking for alternatives. And considering who's sitting on top of the world's remaining oil reserves, we better start to pick up the pace.

Corporate welfare exists in many forms. You know that, I know that, the man in the moon knows that. Some companies rightly pay their "fair share," others don't. Maybe the proposed Daschle-McCain legislation to end corporate tax loopholes will be a good first step.

God bless John McCain for trying to make the federal government less beholden to Big Business and special interests.
