SCENES OF DESOLATION

In Jenin refugee camp, residents gouged at a wasteland of destruction in a desperate search for missing loved ones as the stench of rotting corpses wafted over the scene.

There was no firm word on Palestinian casualties, but Muhammed Abu Ghali, director of Jenin hospital, told Reuters he could confirm 36 dead and said he expected the toll might be anywhere between 200 and 400.

"People are finding bodies every day and they are searching with their hands," he said. "We need international help."
