I am not and have not been discussing the hostility of the Arab powers. I'm talking about the historical roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two things that are beyond doubt: the Palestinians were there first, and the immigrant population was introduced against their will by a foreign occupying power. Despite the theoretical legitimacy of the conqueror's whim, the resident population viewed this sponsored immigration as an act of aggression against them, and responded accordingly.

It may be true that whatever a conqueror that has assumed power does is legitimate. That doesn't make it smart. This particular conqueror's whim has led to a rather large mess. Understanding the roots of the mess will probably not help resolve it, but it does make things look a bit less one -sided. I do think it is important to acknowledge that the Zionists have never hesitated to direct violence against civilians when it suited their purposes to do so.

I don't see this as good guys against bad guys. I see it as people carrying on a battle they've inherited, using any weapon at their disposal. I don't think either side has any real interest in a settlement.
