Pro / Con of Intel giving away Xbox

Imagine an Intel agenda to abandon Xbox and leave for AMD to provide. It’s important to think several steps past the simple design win and to REAL meaning. I few thoughts need to pass your mind in this strawman scenario.

1. What is gained / lost by having xbox design win
2. Is the gain real or bragging rights, and do bragging rights have value in today’s market?

I propose ( my own thoughts) the following.

-Intel does not think xbox is connected to the future of PC’s and that it is a low profit business.
-Intel likes to shift resources to profitable businesses.
-Reality has set in on what x box means….nothing but bragging rights.

Why give away

Strategic?
1. Realization that bragging rights is not important in this profit driven market. Priority one is profits.
2. While not a burden on current Intel manufacturing it would create challenges for AMD
a. Resources for new infrastructure
b. Factory wafer commits.
c. Dilution of resources
i. Transfer process to a foundry if used
ii. Sustaining activities
iii. Design resources
iv. Marketing resources
3. AMD increased market share without enabling financial strength. (bragging rights)
4. Engineering focus on driving performance and not process transfer issues.
5. drive AMD ASP’s lower

Why not
1. Increased AMD / MSFT cooperation – does x box lead to bigger better things?
2. Bragging rights matter (market share)
3. Increased branding of AMD

In summary, tonight I question why Xbox matters. I think there are positive reasons for Intel to let it go, and also negitive impact for AMD to take on. Market share means nothing if you are not profitable and cannot take advantage of partnerships with other companies. In today’s economy it’s not the right thing to do to continue x-box support for marketing noise. The process transfer and sustaining would be a severe drain on AMD resources and their available bandwidth.

What do you think, lets discuss.
