Exclellent point, Ron, on the changing nature of IT spending toward the high-end.

The same thing is happening in semi-equips. We have entered a period of technology buys, not capacity buys.

KLIC's CC made it clear yesterday. Company said chip foundries doing cutting-edge fabrication were near 100 pct capacity, while KLIC's broader customer base is operating in the 60 pct range. As a result, KLIC seeing solid bookings for its most advanced bonder, which they estimate is 1.5 generations ahead of competition. Older models sold at fire-sale prices just to get rid of them.

In many other parts of the fab process, the effect is the same -- leading-edge products are moving while the traditional bread-and-butter items are still in a slump. This, of course, is giving the market fits as the natural order realigns itself.

Best rgds,
Jonathan
