Is there an urgent need to drill there right now? I'm having a hard time seeing why we need to go there immediately, unless we're aiming to collapse the worldwide price of oil so that less dollars flow into terrorist coffers.

Only as a national security interest. It is downright foolish to be reliant on oil from this region that, over the next 15 years, is obviously going to be such a wreck. Not only are the current problems (Iran, Iraq, and the Palestinians) going to continue to exist, new problems are going to surface that are much, much larger -- disputes over water rights. This is a huge looming problem in this area that will continue to destablilize the entire region for years to come.

We need to take every step we can to minimize our dependence on the region. I do believe hybrids will begin to provide significant relief over the coming few years; but it is just really, really bad judgment to be counting on buying so much oil from MidEast sources.

Without drilling the first well, the promise of drilling in ANWR will immediately have a stablizing effect on oil prices. As it is now, we experience economic disruption every time some conflict heats up in the Middle East. While ANWR resources aren't sufficient to ELIMINATE this problem, it can certainly serve to mitigate it somewhat.

The bigger question, however, is "Why Not?". The argument that the liberals have put forth is laughingly absurd. If people understood the facts it wouldn't even be an issue. But you can never underestimate the intellect of the American public.
