But the rice is mostly "wild" rice and it is several times more expensive than the rice imported from elsewhere. And the amount harvested is quite insignificant.

While driving through the backroads of Michigan and Minnesotta in the summertime, I have often seen roadside signs advertising wild rice. The rice for sale was probably last year's crop.

In many instances the wild rice was harvested by native Indians in canoes, especially in Manitoba. Not a pleasant job considering the superabundance of blackflies and mosquitoes even in the milder heat of late summer! I guess ordinary folks will have to wear insect repellant-soaked clothings and protective face-nets as if they were going to fish in the wilds.
