I don't think it is an either or proposition. Where did all the blacksmiths go? You hopefully know that the AUTOMOBILE was an environmentally friendly challenge to what was a worse situation using horses. Even at its worst, the dirty air was not as bad as if we had continued using horses into the 1940's. Times and technologies change and we should be as the willow.

[Edit: if I steal off your land and can make a business of it due to improper accounting, I don't think it should be summarized as being "economic".]
