Japanese tourists try to visit besieged church
Yomiuri Shimbun
A pair of Japanese tourists were "rescued" by news reporters in the West Bank city of Bethlehem as they went looking for the Church of the Nativity, utterly unaware of the ongoing confrontation at the church between the Israeli Army and Palestinians holed up inside, local news reports said Wednesday.
They were quoted as saying that they did not notice anything at all unusual, such as the streets being deserted due to the ongoing curfew, because they were preoccupied with reading a guidebook.
A group of news cameramen, clad in flak jackets and helmets, passing near the church found the pair. When one of the cameramen pointed out the numerous bullet holes in a nearby building, the two tourists quickly canceled their plan to visit the church.
The two have been traveling for the past six months and have not been watching television or paying attention to news reports during their trip and thus knew nothing about the situation in the West Bank, the reports said.
