Most botanists have, of late(post 79?), correctly(IMHO) reclassified wild rice Zizania(all members) as "pseudocereals" from the earlier school of thought which had them more near a grass. It seems unclear if this practice is because so many species & sub-species are now broadly cultivated or if wild rice has long been a human food.

Of added interest is that the genetic base is much more diverse for Zizania than actual rice, rather disease free, and despite massively inferior(current) yields some place great possible future value in it as a human & or animal feed. Another factor of possible great Zizania value in prevention of human starvation is the broad zone map range of the plant family & is seen from Canada into Mexico. Many speculate that were there to develop a new rice disease of the scope which caused the potato famine of Ireland, loss of human life might = 100M.
