"Intel could just as easily leave Yamhill dormant, keep their foot on AMD's X86-64 throat, with no OS support, and go with IA-64, which already has announced Microsoft support"

That's a scenario. Here is another. Hammer already has Linux support, and Microsoft has repeatedly described Linux as "the" threat, having moved up from "no" to "a" and now "the". Considering that Linux has captured a whole lot of the Internet and small server market, Linux-based Hammer systems will likely be attractive. Considering the die size of IA-64 for the announced future, it's unlikely to play much in that market. Sure, there are Xeons, but a certain percentage of the market is going to be interested in 64 bit systems and won't be interested in IA-64...

Microsoft is going to be interested in either Hammer or Yamhill, or both.
