marginmike, >.If I hear one more Suzie Orhman say you need 1-2 moths salary put away for a rainy day

This is nuts!!!! Suzie Orhman has an IQ of less than zero. Back in the old days <g> we were advised to have at least a years worth of savings for a period of unemployment. Also to assume extra costs during the year like the purchase of a car or what ever else could go wrong. The old worst case analysis scheme.

I know during the last recession in 1990, 1991, and 1992 (whenever it was) some people were out of work for 3 years - so your thoughts of 2 to 3 years is reasonable. If this bubble bursting does its usual economic thing 3 years of savings could be a requirement. It would be fun to see the data on what capital this working generation really has to buffer an unemployment period.

We can use these old military bases we are closing down to house the unemployed.
