hj, i'm thinking of moving to portland for a promotion. my house is up about 70-80% in the last 4 years. if i go to portland i could...

1. sell our house ins diego and pay just about cash for a home in oregon.
2. keep the home here, rent it out, depreciate it, blah, blah, blah and buy a home up there with about 10% down.

#1 sounds good short term. we would have a condo and a home, free and clear.

#2 sounds good long term but entails more risk. we will potentially own three homes down the road. long term rental income from two homes sounds sweet :-) i have retirement money to cover an unemployment, un-rentable disaster for about 2-3 years, although i would obviously hate to burn my retirement up.

i obviously wouldn't be happy if i buy up in portland and then real estate tanks in diego and portland - the gift we've received over the last 4 years could evaporate.

what do ya think?

maybe i should just stay in diego... ;-)

i think i'll head down to jakes in del mar to ponder it with tony the tiger. :-)
