People most definitely have more freedom here than in most countries to do as they please, within the limits of the law. That is a cherished value. So is freedom of speech, which gives me or anyone else the right to express judgments about others. It is pretty simple when you think about it. As to my being judged, it happens a lot, as you might verify by reading Poet's posts.

There is a vast open range of behaviors that is not regulated by the narrow bands of our laws. When there is a shared consensus of values in a society, public opprobrium becomes a powerful force in regulating behaviors on that open range. That might stretch from something as simple as good manners to more important issues such as sexual conduct, as in the case of promiscuity. I do not think (in general) that we need more laws. I do think that we would benefit as a society if people were more willing to voice opinions concerning behaviors that they observe and of which they do not approve, and less fearful of offending others in the process.
