A 'BANKNG HOLIDAY'. How nice. It conjures up visions of the family spending a day at the beach. Such euphemisms these folks come up with! A Banking Holiday is when they shut down the banks, all the banks. The customers can't withdraw THIER money...'cause the bankers are on holiday, well deserved I'm sure. One wag said that they declared a holiday rather than open the bank doors because they feared that all the folks would want THEIR money... and others, somewhat displeased if there was no money for them, might even poke the bankers in the nose. A Bank Holiday! Indeed.
