>> Well well well. Maxtor annual report just arrived. Think I'll go read it and see if I can't find something worth starting an arguement over :o)

Here's one possible subject for argument. Does Maxtor really spend $200m on research ? I think that was the amount (or was it $230m or $300m ?) that Mike Cannon said would be spent the first year of the merger. What do they spend all those millions on ? That is approx what General Motors spends to support $180B/year sales.

I wonder if some of that "research" is really just plain development expenses, which is why it is so hard to reduce. Also wdc spends only a tenth of that (not sure, need to look it up). So is wdc falling in a trap of lack of new products ? Yet they seem right up there in speed, cache and density. Of course their product lines are fewer.

At one time I had equal investment in wdc and mxo. The I switched it all to wdc. Which worked well because wdc quardupled from the low, and mxo did a more modest double+.

I am now in a quandry over the research issue. Should I go back to mxo for their possible technological lead, or stay with wdc since they know how to make a profit ?

It seems the relevant research is done by the head and media and suspension makers anyway. So what "research" do the likes of mxo need to do ?

I assume you have some mxo stock. So good luck to both of us!
