A conventional power plant runs from 40 to 80 percent of the time, with down time for maintenance and repair. No plant runs 24/7 all year. Windmills operate at 25% to 40% of capacity on an annualized basis, and this is getting better as the technology and siting improves. awea.org Because they are scattered over a large area, they are rarely all still at the same time. Also windy conditions are often when the power is needed, as when a cold front blows through. I doubt that we will ever be dependent on the wind for our source of electricity, but it can certainly make a much bigger contribution than it is now, and do it pollution free for as long as the equipment lasts.
