NEC Rises After Report It Will Return to Profit (Update1)

Tokyo, April 22 (Bloomberg) -- NEC Corp.'s shares rose after the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported yesterday Japan's second- largest chipmaker is forecasting group net profit of as much as 10 billion yen ($76.6 million) for the fiscal year ending March 2003.

The shares rose as much as 48 yen, or 4.8 percent, to 1,048 yen and were recently traded at 1,046.

The shares of other Japanese semiconductor makers also rose. Toshiba Corp., the second-largest chipmaker after Intel Corp., surged as much as 3.9 percent to 580 yen, while Hitachi Ltd., Japan's No. 2 chipmaker, rose as much as 3 percent to 958 yen. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. rose as much as 4.6 percent to 588 yen, and Fujitsu Ltd. rose as much as 4.9 percent to 1,033 yen.
